OptiGen test for Spanish Water Dogs is available to determine Carrier Status for PRA.  All breeders should have their dogs tested before breeding and share the results!!!!  When purchasing a puppy, please ask your breeder for results of the OptiGen test!  OptiGen is now a mandatory requirement for CHIC (Canine Health Information Center)  For a list of dogs that have been tested, please go to www.offa.org and click on "search records"  in Breed, highlight Spanish Water Dog, under Reports, highlight "Progressive Retinal Atrophy"

There are some Spanish Water Dog breeders who are breeding untested dogs and dogs with hip dysplasia. PRA (Progressive Retinal Atrophy), which causes blindness is a preventable disease in the SWD.  All breeders should be doing DNA tests through OptiGen.  DO NOT purchase a puppy from parents who have not been OptiGen tested!! ALL BREEDING DOGS SHOULD BE TESTED AND THE RESULTS GIVEN TO POTENTIAL PUPPY BUYERS When contacting a breeder, make sure that you ask for proof of health certification!  Breeders are also breeding dogs before they are physically and mentally mature, before the age of two.  Please be certain that when interviewing breeders, you ask the ages of the sire and dam!!  This goes for breeders both here and abroad.  When interviewing a breeder, make sure that their breeding habits are ethical.
